CCSRE Faculty Director, Professor Ramon Saldivar, the Undergraduate Program in CSRE Facutly Director, Professor Jose David Saldivar, IDA Faculty Director, Professor H. Samy Alim, and IDA Executive Director, Jeff Chang kicked off the 10-week course by introducing the concept(s) of "occupation" and the role of the artist in making cultural change.
Join us for a 10-week course exploring how the arts reflect the complex, contested, and shifting ideas associated with the word “Occupation.” Examine this idea from indigenous, Black, immigrant, worker, and student perspectives, and in contexts such as the 1992 Los Angeles riots, present-day Oakland, and the Stanford campus itself. Through panels, performances, and more, learn how artists have responded to Occupation, and how they have “occupied” spaces in order to transform them.
Guest Speakers/Performers include:
· Anna Deavere Smith
· Rubén Martinez
· Angela Davis
· Mark Gonzales
· Favianna Rodriguez
· Boots Riley
