Examining Innovative Pedagogy and School Practice in the Global South Presentation by Professor Monisha Bajaj January 12, 11:45am-1pm, location: The Clayman Institute This presentation explores attempts to disrupt gender inequality in alternative and innovative educational programs run by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Zambia and India. Deliberate school policies and supplemental education programs aimed at "undoing gender" or fostering greater gender equity will be examined. The findings suggest that the pedagogical practices deployed by alternative schools and educational NGOs have generally succeeded in destabilizing norms of gender subordination and gender-based violence for the students involved, though the replicability and spread of these practices are interrogated given broader questions about the respective country's public resources and political will. An RSVP is required to attend this event. Please email [email protected] if you plan to attend. _______________________________________________________________________________ Stanford Alumni Mentoring Workshop January 12, 12-1pm, Women's Community Center lounge Mentoring is one of many ways women may build meaningful and mutually satisfying relationships with alumni. Sign up for EDUC 100B: Gender Inequality in Schools and Society (EAST House Seminar Wednesdays 7-8pm @ EAST House [Enrollment limited to 20] This new seminar introduces students to issues and action related to gender inequality in schools and society in the United States and around the world. Speakers from a range of backgrounds share their experiences in activism - as teachers, researchers, and writers; founders of non-profit organizations; and as grant-makers and political activists. In the second half of the quarter, students organize into small groups based around these or other issues of their choosing to develop "action plans" to remedy some aspect of gender-based inequality. We conclude with groups presenting their ideas to the class and to a small panel of experts who have launched similar action plans. Transform your anger into action!
