From the Director

Persis DrellSLAC is home to cutting-edge facilities and technologies used to further our collective scientific understanding of the world—and the universe—around us. Researchers from across the globe come to SLAC to uncover mysteries on the smallest and largest scales, from the workings of the atom to the enigmas of the cosmos.

The result has been five decades of discovery and innovation, a legacy the laboratory has built upon that has brought us to today. As we mark 2012, the year of the laboratory's golden anniversary, it is clear that our past has been a great one.

Our future looks to be even greater.

SLAC is at the frontier of scientific discovery. With its range of diverse programs and facilities, and its exceptional researchers and those who support their work, SLAC is at the forefront of groundbreaking discoveries across the sciences, from astrophysics and accelerator research to chemistry, materials and energy science.

So what's in our future? Whether it be revolutionizing our understanding of biological processes, uncovering the secrets of dark matter, or discovering the key to unlocking photosynthesis, SLAC is well poised to play a role.

I, for one, can't wait to see what the next 50 years will bring.
