SIMES was established in 2005 with the goal of creating a DOE funded center of excellence at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University. SIMES’ purpose was to address key challenges associated with DOE’s mission in the areas of condensed matter physics and materials science, and to complement and enhance DOE’s national user facilities at SLAC. SIMES was to serve as a link between SLAC and the intellectual resources in other Stanford schools, promoting interdisciplinary research on high risk, high payoff projects that are difficult to accomplish in a university setting alone. SIMES advances the university’s scholastic and educational mission through support of research and education of students.
