Faculty Senate will devote Thursday's meeting to online education
A one-hour Q&A will follow a 35-minute presentation by four faculty panelists.
In its second meeting of fall quarter, the senate will hear John Mitchell, vice provost for online learning, and three senior associate deans discuss online education.
Mitchell was named to the new position in August, when Stanford created the Office of the Vice Provost for Online Learning. His appointment was a landmark step in the university's commitment to bringing new teaching and learning methods to Stanford students - and to students around the world.
Mitchell is the Mary and Gordon Crary Family Professor of Computer Science.
The three other panelists, all of whom were recently appointed to lead their schools' online education initiatives, are:
- Peter DeMarzo, senior associate dean for academic administration and Mizuho Financial Group Professor in the Graduate School of Business
- Bernd Girod, a professor of electrical engineering and senior associate dean for online learning and professional development in the School of Engineering
- Charles Prober, a professor of pediatrics and of microbiology and immunology, and senior associate dean for medical education at Stanford School of Medicine
