           September 18, 2012

Working Mother today named Stanford University as one of the nation's Working Mother "100 Best Companies" 2012 for its commitment to creating, executing and promoting innovative policies to support employees as they balance work and family responsibilities.

In its 27th year of recognizing companies for better serving working mothers, this year Working Mother recognized companies for progressive workplace programs, including child care, flexibility, career advancement, and paid family leave.

Stanford's commitment to employee work-life balance is most notable in six areas where the university ranked extraordinarily high, including: paid-time off; programs for employees with specialized care; adoption leave; child care program offerings; access to child care programs; and, benefit spending and coverage.

The university proudly carries on the forward-thinking legacy left by Leland and Jane Stanford, who founded the institution more than 120 years ago based on strong values related to children and women. The Stanfords welcomed all students as their own children into the university after their son's death, and granted admission to female students as the first coeducational private university on the west coast.

"Our efforts to support families continues to be a central focus for the university. By providing work-life options for our faculty, staff, and students, we achieve greater engagement, productivity and passion for the important work done here," said Phyllis Stewart Pires, Stanford's Director of WorkLife Strategy. "As a working mother myself, I appreciate the tangible, as well as emotional value of Stanford's work-life programs for my family."

Stanford is among one of just three educational institutions across the country recognized this year. Stanford last participated in the Working Mother "100 Best Companies" contest in 1996, when the university also ranked in the top 100.

Recognized companies will be featured in the October/November issue of Working Mother magazine, on www.workingmother.com and will be honored at the Work Life Congress annual conference to be held October 8 -10 in New York City. "This year's 100 Best Companies are leading the way for the rest of the nation," said Carol Evans, president of Working Mother Media. "They have created not only essential benefits, like flexible work options and telecommuting, but have also shown their commitment in new ways like elder care referral and legal assistance to help busy parents manage their personal lives as well as their careers."
