       June 22, 2012

Stanford University was named this week as one of the 2012 Top Workplaces in the Bay Area, and is the only institution of higher education to receive the regional award. The recognition was granted to 75 area employers in large, midsize and medium organizations. Stanford ranked 10th in our category from the 19 large employers who entered the contest; a large employer was defined as having 500 or more employees.

The ranking is a result of survey responses from close to 5,500 staff members who confirmed that Stanford’s spirit, culture, and work place environment is among the best in the Bay Area and beyond.

“How do we know that you’re the top 75 workplaces in the Bay Area?” asked Doug Claffey, CEO of Workplace Dynamics, the research partner for the Top Workplaces program, during this week’s awards ceremony. “Because your employees told us you should be here.”

This was the first year Stanford participated in the contest, sponsored by the Bay Area News Group in partnership with Monster. About 140 local employers competed for the award this year, with slightly more than half receiving recognition. During his keynote address, Eric Winegardner, Vice President of Client Adoption for Monster Worldwide encouraged employees to take care of their employees, who serve as their best recruiters and brand ambassadors.

Earlier this year, Stanford was also recognized as a 2012 Best Place to Work in the Bay Area. Of the more than 125 organizations that won recognition in that contest, Stanford ranked seventh in the large organization category and first among institutions of higher education across all contest categories.

“While we entered these contests to confirm our belief that Stanford is a great workplace, we also benefited by deepening our understanding about areas in which we can improve,” stated David Jones, Vice President of University Human Resources (UHR).

Participation in these contests has been highly useful to Stanford’s recruitment messaging, and has helped UHR prepare for conducting a university-wide Employee Engagement Survey in FY 14.
